August II

Zev asked me to run tonight's sim and forwarded along an e-mail an owner had sent to him. Before I give you the shocking news as to who the AL and ZL front-runners are, I'm going to gently remind all owners to please cc: me on any roster moves, trades, league issues, or whatnot that you e-mail Zev.

There.

And, to keep everyone further in suspense, here are the teams still in contention for the Commissioner's Trophy for League Participation. Note that everyone's favorite commissioner is not on the list:

Cleveland
Hickory
Houston
Los Angeles
Maui
New York
River Cities
Seattle

Now onto the standings report...

In a result that no one could've foreseen, both River Cities and Seattle lead their leagues by a combined 48 games. The Monarchs have a 26 game on AL Wild Card leader Brooklyn, and over in the ZL, River Cities leads Walla Walla by only 22 games. Don't go start printing those playoff tickets yet, Nate...

The Wild Card races are far more interesting. As mentioned, Brooklyn and Walla Walla are pacing the rest of the also-rans, but their leads are much more tenuous. Brooklyn leads Hickory by two games, with Houston five behind the Wolves, and Maui still holding onto hope in Hawaii with eight games to make up in the final month of the season.

Walla Walla has but a game's lead on the surprising Steamers of Cleveland, while last year's ZL champ New York is five behind the Federal Duck, and this reporter's favorite franchise, the Los Angeles Scorpions are just 10 games behind the leaders in the race to decide who gets to play River Cities in the first round of the playoffs.

It's now the first of September, which means that 40 is the new 25, so go ahead and call up some prospects to see what they can do. Perhaps one will tip the balance between playing in October or not.

The league file is on its way up. Expect it by midnight EDT/9pm PDT. Zev will unzip the league reports in the morning.

Next sim? Next Wednesday!

  1. Well, no injuries going into the last month, that's a good thing. Let's hope we can keep that string going.

I'm expanding my roster to 29 by bringing up some back up players and two hotshots. Bruno Talamantez is finally coming up to see what he can do with a few starts. And Alcazar is coming up to try to compete with Amos at 1B. I knew this would be coming.

    Let's get to the playoffs!

  3. No worries, Zev. I hope your continued involvement in the Wild Card race means I get to run more sims!

It's nice to see my losing streak reached 12 games before I mysteriously beat River Cities twice in a row.

  4. One game over .500 and one game out of the playoffs with a -5 against my Pyt. Record. I feel good going into the last month of the season. Kaler will be coming up (and Villalpando would have been making his ML debut) so we will see if he can help get me in the playoffs and maybe during them. This has been one great season for the people in Cleveland, let's hope it ends with a playoff run.

  5. Seattle is now entering the praying-for-no-serious-injuries portion of the season. Calling up basically everyone already on my 40-man roster and playing time for everyone! Well, I'll keep starting Lutz just to see if he can grab the Triple Crown and Gerhardt to get to 100 steals. Otherwise, regular rest for the starters and a six-man rotation.

P.S. Zev, Michael, I am willing to bribe as necessary. No injuries the next couple sims, ok? Wink wink, nudge nudge. :)

  6. By the way, anyone else notice that Nate and I are, yet again, tied in Pythagorean record? It's just creepy the way that keeps happening year after year.

  7. Mack: If Gerhardt breaks his leg sliding into second base on his 99th steal, I will laugh harder than I have in a long time.

I just hope it doesn't happen, especially in a sim I may or may not run.

  9. I too must say that I am excited for this sim. I am one game back in the Wild Card, lots of AAA players coming up, including Kaler (Villapando would have made his debut, too) and Sallee will be up in the pros making an impact right away. There is a good deal to look forward to in Cleveland. Look for a packed ballpark coming up for the playoff drive.
