Interesting games?

Maui and Brooklyn fought a seventeen inning duel on 5/6. Brooklyn had a 4-0 going into the bottom of the ninth as starter David Reimers threw eight shutout innings. Alas, the bullpen (one of the strengths of the Brooklyn team) could not hold it together in the ninth.

Robert Riddick started the inning for the Wolves and quickly got two outs. Down to their last batter, however, the Mashers did not give up. A single by former Wolf John Hodge was followed by a RBI double by the now-injured-and-soon-to-be-retired Gene Zwick. After Vernon Cipriani came in to pitch, Robert Estill followed with an RBI single and then Dong Lutz sent a ball over the left field wall to tie the game at 4-4.

Both teams traded a pair of runs in the 11th. Brooklyn got two on the board from a Ronald Chambers single. Maui got its pair from a triple off the bat of 3B Octavio Cabrales.

Maui threatened in the bottom of the 16th when they loaded the bases with no one out. However, they failed to score when Cabrales swung at a 3-0 pitch (after the previous two batters walked!!) and grounded into a 4-2-3 double play. No Neck Natsu then popped out to end the inning.

Given another chance, the Wolves made the most of it. In the top of the 17th, they led off with a single by 3B Bruce Parker. He was then brought home by a Bruce Manning triple. In the bottom of the inning, Maui managed a double by RF John Custard, but that was about it.

Time of Game: 5:07
Bruce Parker went 5-for-8. Bruce Manning missed the cycle by a double.

Next sim? Next Saturday night.

  1. Oof. That's two career-ending injuries this season for Maui. The first one wasn't such a big loss, but this time, losing a 5* catcher hurts.

If anyone is looking to trade a catcher, let me know!

  2. I don't think I've ever had a strong pitching staff since we switched to OOTP9. Ugh.

At least my hitters are #2 in the league.

  3. Congrats to Monarch hero Greg Mudge, who became the second player in SDMB OOTP to collect 2,000 hits in his career.

He is also now four home runs shy of passing Russell Powell as the all-time home run king and just eight short of becoming the first player to have 400 home runs in his career.

It looks like a pretty good dogfight for the four playoff spots this year, with the possible exception of Maui running away and hiding with the title in the new division. Eight teams are within four games of a playoff berth. That's pretty good.
