Trade: River Cities and Hickory pull the trigger
Dateline Marietta 6/24/09: Last night the owners of River Cities and Hickory worked out a classic mid-season deal designed to fill both teams needs.
River Cities acquires from Hickory Center Fielder Alan Callahan, Middle Infielder Eduardo Diaz, and Twenty-year-old Second Base Prospect Robert Quinones in return for sending to Hickory Starting Pitching prospects Alberto Carballo (AAA) and Morris Spellman (AA). In addition, Hickory acquires Center Fielder Gary Giles and Utility Man John Spalding, both at the major league level.
"It's a clear case of dealing from strength regarding our depth of starting pitching." said Paddlewheelers owner Nate Wooley. "Much as I personally like Carballo and Spellman our rotation is largely locked up for the next few years. Barring series of catastrophic injuries those two are better off going someplace they can play and grow into their adult roles."
"For our part being able to upgrade our back up Center Field position and strengthen our outfield is too good to pass up. And Diaz will be a more than adequate replacement for Spalding. I mean, look at the guy: Spalding's hitting .183/.281/.207. I think my grandmother could do that. And with Glatt up to back up Fout we didn't have a strong need for a utility man at all three positions."
Diaz, reached at the Hickory airport said "I've been with the River Cities organization before and I'll be glad to see those guys again. I realize I won't be able to move Tim or Sabertooth out of their starting positions but an opportunity to work with the River Cities coaching staff I think I'll have a real opportunity to learn, grow and someday get back to starting for a major league team. Plus, hey, I just gained 21 games in the standings and I'm in the thick of a race. Should be an exciting time down the stretch."
The players going to Hickory weren't quite so excited. "I know Anton'd been smacking the hell out of the ball this season but I didn't think I deserved a ticket out of town. Who do they think TAUGHT him to hit like that? Me, that's who! Now I've got to go to Hickory and start all over. Well, at least I'll be starting. That'll be good to do again. I don't think they'd have started me no matter what happened."
Spalding was more resigned. "Whatever happens, happens. I'm not going to get a great chance to shine no matter what. I'm just glad to have the opportunity to put on the uniform everyday and maybe angle myself a minor league managing gig in the next few years like that guy in the movie. You think they really have chicks like that Savoy girl in A ball? That would be hot. I'm just glad I've been able to contribute and I did get a Cecil Cup ring out of the deal. It's really shiny."
When reached Callahan refused comment just muttered something about being conflicted over getting into a race but going from starting to being a back up. To this reporter he sounded drunk.

Seattle Fills Middle Infield Void
SEATTLE (AP):
Seattle turned another blockbuster trade today, sending five players to the New York Gothams for last year's Zotti League Rookie of the Year, Carmelo "The Gimp" Deleon and New York's third round pick in the draft next year. Seattle sent starting pitcher Bradford McGreevy, starting shortstop Derrick Raglin, and three prospects to New York in the deal.
General Manager Mack Shultz was grilled by the press today about whether trading McGreevy, who has the lowest ERA of any of Seattle's starting pitchers this year, and Raglin, who has been the starting shortstop since the franchise's inception, would hurt the team's chances of making it back to the Cecil Cup this year. "We said in the offseason that we're looking to the future and not necessarily this year. We'd like to win now, but we're trying to build a dynasty here. Besides, it's not like the Gimp is chopped liver. The guy can really rake."
McGreevy, or Brad as the Seattle fans famously chanted after last year's deal bringing him to the Emerald City from South Bay, admitted that he'll miss the "action" in Seattle but still sounded upbeat about the deal. "I like the Zotti League. The groupies ... I mean hotels ... are better there. I'll be glad to visit some of my old 'friends.'"
Raglin was much more despondent. "I've never played anywhere but Seattle," he moped. "I've even got my post-Cup-defeat pick-me-up vacation planned. What do I do now? Huh? What do I do now?"
Two of the prospects dealt by Seattle, Samuel Matamoros and Richard Hudock, have been moving through the minor leagues quickly this year and can be expected to join McGreevy and Raglin in New York soon. The third, reliever Otha Wells, has posted a 3.00 ERA in AAA Tacoma this year and may move to the New York bullpen soon.

New York's GM said "I mean, how can you beat that? We got five players for just one! And from Seattle, no less! What a coup!"
When told by this reporter that the one player New York traded away was starting shortstop Carmino Deleon, last year's Zotti league Outstanding Newcomer and this year's team leader in batting average as well as the Zotti league player of the month in April, New York GM said "Wait... we traded who??? Deleon? What??? Where's that damn assistant GM...." and wandered off with steam coming from his ears....
After talking with his assistant and calming down slightly, NY's GM came back and announced the trade officially to the media. Seattle gets SS Carmino Deleon and NY's 2010 3rd round pick in exchange for ML SP Bradford McGreevy, ML SS Derrick Raglin, AAA 3B Samual Matamoros, AA OF Richard Hudock and AAA MR Otha Wells.
"Well, we hate to give up Deleon, that's for sure. But I guess that assistant of mine got a good amount of talent back. McGreevy gives us a third starting pitcher to build around in addition to Placencia and Bisco, with some more help on the farm in Thomas and Andrews. Matamoros and Hudock are the 20th and 21st rated prospects in the game - Matamoros gives us a solid option at 3B if Harry Diemer opts to leave, and Hudock is a solid young OF that should be teaming with Kevin Rubio in the OF for years to come. Otha Wells doesn't suck, which is a fairly good thing in a middle relief prospect. Raglin.... well, he was good once, maybe he'll find the fountain of youth when he starts drinking the New York City tap water. The greatest playoff pitcher in SDMB league history comes home
REDONDO BEACH, CA, January 15, 2007 -- Today, the illustrious South Bay Scorpion franchise completed a trade they had been trying to make for over a season. South Bay acquired starting pitcher Troy Nelson from New York in exchange for recently demoted outfielder James Larson. Coïncidentally, both Nelson and Larson were inaugural members of the Stockholm Sluggers.
Nelson pitched for the Sluggers/Manatees/Scorpions franchise for the first six years of his career, before jumping to the Gothams in the winter of 2008. Nelson said, "I am ecstatic to finish my career where I began. Wait. We're not in Stockholm anymore?"
In five games in the Cecil Cup, all starts, Nelson was 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 36.2 innings, including a one-hit masterpiece over Houston in the 2004 Cup. Nelson also pitched the first no-hitter in SDMB league history. This season, he is 2-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts.
Larson ends a disappointing second run with his initial franchise, including a demotion to AAA Arizona Bay this season. "I'm glad I can start again, but I'm sad I won't get to win a ring with South Bay this season," Larson said, through his agent. He batted .148 with one HR and two RBIs in 27 at-bats before being sent down. With the Tools, he rebounded nicely with an OPS of 1.145, giving hope that he will help the Gothams down the stretch this season.
In addition to Nelson, South Bay also acquired young LF Sherman Evanoff, and sent their 4th round pick in the 2010 draft to New York.
"Yes," owner/GM Michael Weintraub said. "We now have seven starters on our roster. With the 8th and 9th innings anchored by Carroll and Cuomo, we now have seven guys to give us seven innings each night. I can't wait until Nelson gets the start in game 4 of the Cecil Cup this October, with the chance to end his career with another sweep in the finals."
Is Weintraub counting his chickens before they hatch, or will his confidence in presetting his postseason rotation win him an unprecedented fifth Cecil Cup championship? Only time will tell.

Now THAT Is a Mid-Season Acquisition!

The Seattle Monarchs, after carefully building up the strongest minor league system and collection of young talent, dealt away four significant players to acquire Chad Nelligan from Hickory today. "It's a deal that signals we're trying to win it all this year and to heck with the three-year plan," said General Manager Mack Shultz. "We feel that Nelligan is the top starter in the game, even counting that no-good-POS Ramirez."
Nelligan, who was voted SDMB OOTP All World Starting Pitcher last year after being totally screwed over by the Adams League Pitcher of the Year voters, was elated to join the Monarchs. "I've heard about a golden land, where offenses score runs for pitchers and those pitchers are afforded leads from time to time. I look forward to that new experience," said Nellie.
In return, Seattle dealt away the top starting pitching prospect in the all of the minors, Richard "Crazylegs" Shipp, young outfielder Lowell Maclin, budding prospect outfielder Isaac McGahan, and starting pitcher prospect Joe Remer. In all, the deal included three former first round picks (Shipp, McGahan, and Remer).
"I know, I know, it's a lot to give up, but Mark Nelms, the general manager for Hickory, beat me to a pulp. The guy just wore down my will," explained Shultz. Bug in the Game
Something weird happened with the June 3 games. They seem to have counted in the standings,but none of the stats went to the players. See the Box Scores. Unfortunately for me, that meant that Demarcus Ramirez had the chance to beat me twice in a row.
Michael, I really hope Ramirez goes into free agency and you sign him and get him the $@#$ out of the Adams League.

SEATTLE -- The first big mid-season move was finalized today between the Seattle Monarchs and the Covington Demons. Despite being in the thick of a playoff race, Seattle dealt three people off its major league roster, starting pitcher Cristian Sedillo, reliever Joshua Elders, and third baseman Elias Viers. They also sent Kenneth Byers, a top starting pitching prospect, and their second round pick next year for minor league outfielder (and this year's first pick in the draft) Mohammad Stelly as well as Covington's first round pick next year.
Cristian Sedillo, who was a key piece in the monster offseason deal with South Bay in January, is a young, solid starting pitcher who has struggled in his role as the occasional fifth starter in Seattle. His talent was demonstrated by his 3.41 ERA last year in 17 starts for South Bay. His small-market friendly contract status of working for the minimum for the next three years and under arbitration for three after that likely appealed to Covington. "I'm kind of surprised," Sedillo said. "I mean, they throw a parade for me a couple of months ago, keep me sitting on the sidelines for two months, and then trade me. It was a hell of a parade too. Floats, homecoming queens, those slightly disturbing Seafair Pirates, the whole deal. What the heck?" Sources within the Seattle organization say that the Monarchs wanted to bring up prize prospect Isaac Diehl to the rotation and dealt Sedillo in part to make room.
General Manager Mack Shultz confirmed the rumors. "We're excited to see what Isaac can do in the major league rotation, as we think his defense has not helped him a lot in AAA, but we're sorry to see Cristian go. He's a solid pitcher and a great presence in the lockerroom. We wish we could have held on to him, but he was a key to making this deal work."
Joshua Elders was significantly more excited by the trade. "I've been told that Covington plans to use me as a starting pitcher, which is what I've always wanted to do. I've made some spot starts in the past and I'm looking forward to moving into the rotation full time." Elders has pitched only six innings all year, despite being healthy and on the major league roster the whole time, as he unexpectedly found himself as one of the last men out of the bullpen. He has a career 4.07 ERA in almost 250 innings of work, which bodes well for his future.
Elias Viers is also eagerly packing his bags for the Demons. After years of backing up John Willer, the career .300 hitter is expected to start at third base for the Demons for the remainder of the year. "I've been waiting to get off the bench and show everyone I'm at least as explosive as that big Willie," announced Viers.
"Josh and Elias have been key contributors for several years to the Monarchs success. Unfortunately for them, we added depth this year that cut into both of their opportunities to get on the field. I'm glad that they will have the chance to shine for Covington this year and help bring the Demons out of their funk. We wish them nothing but the best," said Shultz.
Seattle also sent Kenneth Byers to the Demons. Byers had blossomed on the mound for the Kent Kings this year and was in the process of reporting to Double-A Olympia when word of the deal came down. He is ranked in the top 25 prospects in all of baseball and goes to a franchise starved for credible minor league pitching.
Curiously for a team in contention, Seattle dealt all of these players plus next year's second round pick without any expectation of improving this year's roster. Mohammed "Bingo" Stelly is a prime talent who covers a tremendous amount of ground in the outfield, but has hit just .195 in 41 at bats in AA since being selected first in this year's draft and receiving more than $2 million as a signing bonus. "We obviously believe Bingo's bat will come around. How can he not hit? After all, Bingo is his name-o," explained Shultz to a groaning press corps. "We also obviously hope to pick up another talented player with the first round pick next year."
It will be interesting to see if Seattle's gamble backfires this year and hands the division title to the red-hot Brooklyn Wolves. With only a one game lead at the time of the trade, it's unusual for Seattle to turn yet another starting rotation spot to a rookie. Although Izzie Frau has done well so far, it's rare for a title contender to rest its hope on so many untried arms. Frau and Diehl are in their first year in the majors while McGreevey and Hester are also awfully inexperienced. Hopefully those green arms will bring back the golden prize for the first time in Monarchs history.

Sim's Late...
