Trade: River Cities and Hickory pull the trigger
Dateline Marietta 6/24/09: Last night the owners of River Cities and Hickory worked out a classic mid-season deal designed to fill both teams needs.
River Cities acquires from Hickory Center Fielder Alan Callahan, Middle Infielder Eduardo Diaz, and Twenty-year-old Second Base Prospect Robert Quinones in return for sending to Hickory Starting Pitching prospects Alberto Carballo (AAA) and Morris Spellman (AA). In addition, Hickory acquires Center Fielder Gary Giles and Utility Man John Spalding, both at the major league level.
"It's a clear case of dealing from strength regarding our depth of starting pitching." said Paddlewheelers owner Nate Wooley. "Much as I personally like Carballo and Spellman our rotation is largely locked up for the next few years. Barring series of catastrophic injuries those two are better off going someplace they can play and grow into their adult roles."
"For our part being able to upgrade our back up Center Field position and strengthen our outfield is too good to pass up. And Diaz will be a more than adequate replacement for Spalding. I mean, look at the guy: Spalding's hitting .183/.281/.207. I think my grandmother could do that. And with Glatt up to back up Fout we didn't have a strong need for a utility man at all three positions."
Diaz, reached at the Hickory airport said "I've been with the River Cities organization before and I'll be glad to see those guys again. I realize I won't be able to move Tim or Sabertooth out of their starting positions but an opportunity to work with the River Cities coaching staff I think I'll have a real opportunity to learn, grow and someday get back to starting for a major league team. Plus, hey, I just gained 21 games in the standings and I'm in the thick of a race. Should be an exciting time down the stretch."
The players going to Hickory weren't quite so excited. "I know Anton'd been smacking the hell out of the ball this season but I didn't think I deserved a ticket out of town. Who do they think TAUGHT him to hit like that? Me, that's who! Now I've got to go to Hickory and start all over. Well, at least I'll be starting. That'll be good to do again. I don't think they'd have started me no matter what happened."
Spalding was more resigned. "Whatever happens, happens. I'm not going to get a great chance to shine no matter what. I'm just glad to have the opportunity to put on the uniform everyday and maybe angle myself a minor league managing gig in the next few years like that guy in the movie. You think they really have chicks like that Savoy girl in A ball? That would be hot. I'm just glad I've been able to contribute and I did get a Cecil Cup ring out of the deal. It's really shiny."
When reached Callahan refused comment just muttered something about being conflicted over getting into a race but going from starting to being a back up. To this reporter he sounded drunk.

Seattle Fills Middle Infield Void
SEATTLE (AP):
Seattle turned another blockbuster trade today, sending five players to the New York Gothams for last year's Zotti League Rookie of the Year, Carmelo "The Gimp" Deleon and New York's third round pick in the draft next year. Seattle sent starting pitcher Bradford McGreevy, starting shortstop Derrick Raglin, and three prospects to New York in the deal.
General Manager Mack Shultz was grilled by the press today about whether trading McGreevy, who has the lowest ERA of any of Seattle's starting pitchers this year, and Raglin, who has been the starting shortstop since the franchise's inception, would hurt the team's chances of making it back to the Cecil Cup this year. "We said in the offseason that we're looking to the future and not necessarily this year. We'd like to win now, but we're trying to build a dynasty here. Besides, it's not like the Gimp is chopped liver. The guy can really rake."
McGreevy, or Brad as the Seattle fans famously chanted after last year's deal bringing him to the Emerald City from South Bay, admitted that he'll miss the "action" in Seattle but still sounded upbeat about the deal. "I like the Zotti League. The groupies ... I mean hotels ... are better there. I'll be glad to visit some of my old 'friends.'"
Raglin was much more despondent. "I've never played anywhere but Seattle," he moped. "I've even got my post-Cup-defeat pick-me-up vacation planned. What do I do now? Huh? What do I do now?"
Two of the prospects dealt by Seattle, Samuel Matamoros and Richard Hudock, have been moving through the minor leagues quickly this year and can be expected to join McGreevy and Raglin in New York soon. The third, reliever Otha Wells, has posted a 3.00 ERA in AAA Tacoma this year and may move to the New York bullpen soon.
Deleon, meanwhile, seemed excited about joining a team in the thick of the race. "It gets the heart pumping, you know? I mean, I'm just going to be another piece to the puzzle there, joining Arant, Mudge, and Rawlins in the line-up. I'm looking forward to learning from them and, at the same time, showing what I can do."

When told by this reporter that the one player New York traded away was starting shortstop Carmino Deleon, last year's Zotti league Outstanding Newcomer and this year's team leader in batting average as well as the Zotti league player of the month in April, New York GM said "Wait... we traded who??? Deleon? What??? Where's that damn assistant GM...." and wandered off with steam coming from his ears....
After talking with his assistant and calming down slightly, NY's GM came back and announced the trade officially to the media. Seattle gets SS Carmino Deleon and NY's 2010 3rd round pick in exchange for ML SP Bradford McGreevy, ML SS Derrick Raglin, AAA 3B Samual Matamoros, AA OF Richard Hudock and AAA MR Otha Wells.
"Well, we hate to give up Deleon, that's for sure. But I guess that assistant of mine got a good amount of talent back. McGreevy gives us a third starting pitcher to build around in addition to Placencia and Bisco, with some more help on the farm in Thomas and Andrews. Matamoros and Hudock are the 20th and 21st rated prospects in the game - Matamoros gives us a solid option at 3B if Harry Diemer opts to leave, and Hudock is a solid young OF that should be teaming with Kevin Rubio in the OF for years to come. Otha Wells doesn't suck, which is a fairly good thing in a middle relief prospect. Raglin.... well, he was good once, maybe he'll find the fountain of youth when he starts drinking the New York City tap water. Plus he'll be a better option at SS for the rest of the year than the other option, which was my assistant GM..."
