Ten Year Anniversary - All Time Team?

This is the tenth season of the SDMB OOTP League. I was pondering, at the end of the year, conducting some voting to establish an All-Time, All-League Team. I think it would spawn some interesting arguments in the off-season about peak vs. career performance, team success vs. individual accomplishment, etc. Plus, I'm really curious to know if any Monarchs would make it.

I was thinking I would do it the same way I do the All League voting each year, i.e., circulate a list of candidates and their relevant information; ask for additional nominations; circulate the final voting slate; collect votes; announce the winners. (I think I left out the step that leads to "Profit!", but I'll figure that out later.)

What I'm wondering is, what information would the owners like on the candidates? Just total career stats? Year by year information? Win/loss/titles won records for the teams they were on? Favorite colors?

If you think this might be interesting to do, drop a comment and let me know what information you'd like to have to vote. I suspect that it will take me a while to compile the information, so I thought I'd open the subject now for discussion.

P.S. If you think this is a really stupid idea, let me know that too and I'll just drop it.

  1. As you know, Mack, I'm doing one for my franchise. It's hard to do league-wide, I think, because how do you value players who came into the 2002 season as a in-their prime vet (like, say Joseph Denn, the initial home run king), but were washed up by season three or four of the league?

Then, you have guys who were good/great for a long time, coinciding with the league's tenure (like, say, John Redman), but weren't really ever superstars, or "The Greatest in League History."

Finally, the blood spilled over arguing who the best catcher, or short stop was, is going to be brutal. I love a good trash talk fight as much as anyone (eh, Nate?), but this one doesn't look like fun.

I hope I'm wrong about this, and there will be no contest that Ricky Peppers has been the game's greatest SS, and that Junior Cuomo its greatest closer, but I doubt it.

  2. Thanks Michael and, if your view is shared by the other owners, I'll just drop it. But, I don't see why we won't be able to discuss it, even if there's lots of different opinions, and vote without it ending badly.

  3. I think I'd be more in favor of trying to establish a Hall of Fame for the league. Something we can all vote on and such. With 10 years I think we have enough history to make that valid.

Oh, and if it goes the other way don't forget to track grey ink and black ink.

  4. For once, I agree with Nate.

I think we should create a Hall of Fame after this season, with the provisions that the player must be retired for two seasons for consideration. Owners can nominate whoever they want (whether they played on their team or not) and a simple majority vote (of respondents, not of all owners) is required for induction.

Players who had won a league-wide award (Outstanding Batter/Pitcher, or one of our All World awards) would be eligible for the Hall of Fame one season after retirement, however.

So, non-award winners would be eligible if they retired after the 2009 season, while past winners who retired in 2010 would be eligible this coming offseason.

And, if we have a nice-sized inaugural class, we could put together a First Decade (retired) all-time team. That would calm a lot of the worries I had about Mack's original idea.
