EDIT: OK, sim's done. I advanced the game one day. I uploaded a new league file (see below) but did NOT upload the league reports.
I checked all the players mentioned in the previous comment thread and, of them, none had their major league/minor league contract status changed, and none had their service time changed. Therefore, I just moved anyone in the big leagues back to AAA (where the owner didn't do it himself).
The league file has been updated. To download the league file, you don't have to download the compressed file, unzip it, etc. as you used to do. All you have to do is go to your manager home page and click on the Check For Updated League File link. The game should do the rest. If, when you're done, the game date is 1/2, then it worked.
As for the scouting, I'm in favor of going to individualized scouts as well. However, I'm concerned about the fact that some people may be stuck with inferior scouts for a longer period of time (i.e. contract status) than others. One possible solution, I suppose, is to give any owner the opportunity to opt out of his current scout contract during the next year if he thinks there is a better scout out there. This way, he can get out of a long-term scout contract if he has a bad scout (which he got through no fault of his own), or he can keep the scout. The last day to excersize the option could be one year from today (1/2/2014).
Of course, I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Two things:
ReplyDelete1. My first name is still misspelled. Zev, I think you need to change it in your copy for the next upload.
2. I changed my team colors (because I could...) and they didn't seem to get saved despite uploading my team.
OK, I got an error when downloading the league file.
ReplyDeleteDid you download from within the program? I did it this morning and it seemed to work well.
ReplyDeleteUpload seems to have worked for me. I'll try making some changes this time around. I'll also probably post some changes that need to be made by Zev. For example, like Micahel in LA, my name has been misspelled (Shultz, not Schultz).
ReplyDeleteI don't feel bad though. It's not like I've been in this league something like all six years since its conception or anything...
(Just teasing, Zev. The transition appears to be going fairly smoothly.)
I uploaded some changes for the next sim.
ReplyDeleteReviewing the game some more though raised another issue: manager preferences. It's safe to say I disagree with my computer-hired manager on a number of strategic considerations. Is there any way to allow us to tweak our major league manager's preferences to bring them into line with our own philosophy?
I think I answered my own question. If we set the strategy screen, I think that overrides the manager's preferences.
ReplyDeleteWell, Mack, I think all managers, as well as coaches and scouts, and all other hire-able staff, should be released.
ReplyDeleteMy coaching staff is obviously not the same as the one I had in 6.5, and, since we have the time to set things up right before opening day, we should start anew with the coaches and scouts. That way, owners can get whom they want, and are willing to pay for (heh heh), and not be stuck with the staff assigned by the game.
I think we should release all coaches/scouts, refund their salaries, and also refund any salaries owners gave to coaches/scouts signed in 6.5 this current offseason (since those hirings were erased by the upgrade).
Any thoughts?
I agree, Michael.
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether I'd vote for or against re-hiring all coaches. It's going to be incredibly inflationary to do that.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I don't think refunding the off-season hires is necessary because no actual cash was spent to hire people (it would have been accounted for at the end of the season in 6.5 when the books were balanced) and the transition wiped out those contracts.
Just tried it again. It looks like the file downloads, begins unpacking, and I get this:
ReplyDelete"Error: Could Not Download File"
Downloading the new league file through the game worked just fine for me last night.
ReplyDeleteWith the current state of today's economy, it's probably not the best time for me to urge reliance on the free market... but I am. Coaches should get what the market will bear, and there's just something about assigned coaches that seems unfair to me. But I don't feel super strongly about it.
The scouts that were assigned do seem a bit odd to me. I did get one of the better scouts, but I my coaches in the minors do not seem like rookies that much. Does not seem right, and I am missing a AA manager. Don't know how to get one if I need to. So I am actually for signing new coaches and scout if we can, but will go however with the league.
ReplyDeleteIn favor of releasing and rehiring coaches.
ReplyDeleteAs far as personnel strategy preferences go, as the manual says "you can't change who someone is".
It isn't, however, terribly clear what effect personnel strategy preferences have when you've set team strategy preferences. Both manual pages -- the team and personnel strategy -- say the preferences will be used when games are auto-played. My guess is it combines them: The manager will use his preferences, adjusting them based on what you set up in the team strategy. Which one's weighted more heavily I couldn't say, but, I'd guess the team's preferences take precedence.
Third time, gentlemen. Three times and same error each time.
ReplyDeleteAnd now the motherfucking game won't load because it can't load the world data.
ReplyDeleteI have better things to do.
OK, just before bed last night I got it to load by erasing everything then reinstalling the original ZIP file then using the system to update the information. Since I had an upload out there I figured I wouldn't be losing much. It seemed to work.
ReplyDeleteNow, this morning, I get the same error message about 'cannot load the world' and it won't load.
Having deleted everything again, moved the save game location to a new location, downloaded the original zip again, and reinstalled it appears to be working.
ReplyDeleteWish me luck.
Good Luck Nate
ReplyDeleteOK, a very belated appearance by me. Been a bit busy.
ReplyDeleteI'm all set up, and I think I just sent an update via FTP (some minor roster moves only).
I've got to find some time to run a few seasons of a made up league... I don't at all feel comfortable with what I'm looking at!
I mean, I can tell that Stelly, Cohen and Cuomo are still good, but I don't at all feel comfortable that I understand what's happened with my pitchers.
And a couple of my veteran players just tanked in the ratings, but I think I see some similar things elsewhere.
If we really are going to release all of the coaches and scouts to rehire them, there should be a separate blog entry for debating such a move. The more I've considered it, the more I'm against it.
