Welcome To Spring Training!

Game Date:  3/2/2022

The First-Year Player Draft has been completed and Spring Training has begun.

The first sim of Spring Training (covering one week) will be done on Saturday night.

Signings:
Antelope Valley signed C Lewis Bell (Monck's Corner) 3 yrs/$5.2
Seattle signed C Steve Jones to a contract extension 4 yrs/$27m

The owner of the Barstow franchise has not sent in an update for a long time.  In addition, I have twice tried to contact him, to no avail.  I think it may be time to find a new owner for the franchise.  I will be opening up a thread on the SDMB for a new owner tomorrow.  If we don't find an owner from there, then we will see if the current owners have anyone who might be interested in joining.

Note concerning the draft and the Atlanta-Antelope Valley trade -- apparently you cannot trade draft picks in the game on draft day.  As a result, I manually changed the two draft picks from Antelope Valley to Atlanta.  I then traded Richardson to Antelope Valley.  Since you can't trade a player for nothing, I added $1 to both sides of the deal.

  1. OK. I am officially frustrated. Maybe someone will take pity on me and tell me where I'm going wrong. I just drafted Manuel Trejo with the third overall pick in the draft. Pre-draft, my scout (rating = Excellent for amateurs) had him at 5* potential, including potential ratings of 7, 10, and 8 for contact, power, and batting eye, respectively, and 100 each for speed and stealing. He was my first choice.

Now Trejo is on my team. He has now become a 2.5* potential player; his power potential has dropped from 10 to 5. Essentially, he's gone from a possible middle-of-the-order mainstay to a possible fourth outfielder - literally overnight.

Similarly, my second round pick was high school pitcher Ernest McClendon. My scout had HIM as a 5* prospect, too; in his high school season he had an ERA of 1.51, and 83K in 53.2 innings. Now that he's in my organization his potential has dropped to 2* and he looks like a waste of a high pick.

What am I doing wrong? I understand that there's variabiity built into these players but I seem consistently to have this happen, every year. I see that many other draftees retained the same values once picked; it's only my own that dropped off, sharply. It's very frustrating, as it seems like the draft is a pointless exercise since there's no way that I can see to predict who will hold their value even as far as the week after the draft.

  2. Frank, I feel your pain. This is possibly the first year where my draft picks actually look as good after the draft as they did before the draft and I am a bit stoked about it. Last year's #1 overall draft pick Davis Edwards is still only a 2.5* guys for me, but is considered (for some reason) to be the #3 overall prospect in the game. I just dont get it.

I think in this league much of it has to do with the limited College and High School feeder systems. There were lots of guys that were created out of thin air (like Trejo and McClendon) that did not come from the in game College and High School teams and therefore the scouts just don't have much to go on to make their judgement.

In the other league that most of us are in (the OEL) the same thing happened the first couple seasons after the feeder systems were created. The draft lists were widely different and the players seemed to lose ability almost immediately. After the feeder systems were expanded and had been around so the kids could have 4 years of HS or College play it became much more consistant and I have found that players have not lost their skills right away.

So I am not sure what you can do but be patient and hopefully the same will happen in this league after another draft or two. I also think we should expand the feeder leagues, but that is up to Zev and Michael. Anyone else have an idea of why this happens? This is just my best educated guess.

  3. I'm certainly willing to consider expanding the HS and college leagues.
