  • Wild Card: Brooklyn leads Milwaukee by 3 games
Administrivia:
  • When Zev processed all of the trades at the deadline last sim, he accidentally traded the wrong player in a deal between Brick and Antelope Valley. I corrected that by trading the wrong player back to Antelope Valley in exchange for the player who should have originally been traded to Brick in the first place.
  • Note that I processed that as a normal trade. OOTP allows trades of non-40-man roster players after the 7/31 deadline (and waiver trades of players on the 40-man rosters) but we in our league do not normally allow that. So, even though this "trade" was done after the deadline, no other deals will be accepted until the offseason begins.
Trivia Question Answer:

Last Sim's Trivia Question:

Who holds the record for having the longest career (in terms of seasons pitched) while never having a losing season.  Hint:  This player is NOT in the Hall of Fame.

Jeffrey correctly came up with the correct answer -- Andy Pettitte, who played 18 seasons without having a losing record.

This Sim's Question:
OK, we're going to go back a bit for this one.

Once upon a time, there was an American League team known as the St. Louis Browns.  Whereas most teams go through cycles of good and bad, the Browns were perennially bad.   The Browns played in the American League for 52 years, and only won one pennant (and it took World War II for that to happen!).  The unofficial motto for the Browns was "First in Shoes, First in Booze and Last in the American League."

Eventually the Browns were sold and moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.  While most relocated teams embrace their past incarnations, the Orioles, with good reason, do all they can to forget the Browns and their losing ways.

All that being said, the Browns did, indeed, win some games.  So, the question is this:  Who are the only three pitchers to ever win 22 or more games in a season in a Browns uniform?

                      Bonus Draft Picks!

Now that the regular season is over, we are ready to hand out our first-ever bonus draft picks for participation.

As per the rules change we made before the start of the season, an owner can earn a bonus draft pick depending on how often they upload (or otherwise participate such as by making a trade, etc.) or post in the #vacation channel if they are going to be unable to upload for travel (or other) reasons.

Just to review, the timing of the pick is as follows:

Owners will be given supplemental draft picks based on how often they upload:

                      1. 100% of the time (with one allowance):  1st round
                      2. Between 66% and 100%:  2nd round
                      3. Between 50% and 66%:  3rd round

Bonus picks will be tacked on to the end of the round and distributed in random order. I generated a random number between 1 and 1000 for each team.

The bonus picks are as follows:

                      First Round:

                      1. Philadelphia Hornets (25/25), random number 995
                      2. Brick Barracudas (25/25), random number 956
                      3. Appalachian Black Bears (24/25) , random number 57
                      4. Maui Mongooses (20/20), random number 1

                      Second Round:

                      1. Wilmington Atlantics (23/25, 92%), random number 978
                      2. Antelope Valley Raptors (23/25, 92%), random number 340
                      3. Mepkin Abbey Monks (22/25, 88%), random number 318

                      Last Sim's Trivia Question:

This week, the baseball world lost Don Newcombe, one of the few pitchers to win the Cy Young and MVP awards in the same season.  That season, 1956, he won 27 games.

Due to changes in the way the game is played, it is very rare for pitchers to win more than 25 games in a season.  In fact, the last to do so was Bob Welch, almost thirty years ago.  Who knows when we'll see another 25 game winner?  This, quite literally, makes 25 game winners a dying breed.

Which leads to the question: with the passing of Don Newcombe, how many living 25+ game winners are left?  And, of course, who are they?

There are 11 living 25 game winners.  Seven of them were identified in the #random channel on Slack.  They were:

                      Steve Carlton
                      Ron Guidry
                      Sandy Koufax
                      Denny McLain
                      Mickey Lolich
                      Whitey Ford
                      Steve Stone

The four that were not guessed are:

Fergie Jenkins (25 wins in 1974)
                      Jim Kaat (25 in 1966)
                      Juan Marichal (25 in 1963 and 1966 and 26 in 1968)
                      Tom Seaver (25 in 1969)

                      This Sim's Trivia Question:

There are a number of people whose uniform number is retired on two teams.  However, there are two people who have their number retired by three teams (not counting Jackie Robinson, of course, whose number is retired league wide).  Who are these two people and what are the teams/numbers?

First correct answer in the #random channel on Slack gets 83 Commissioner Points.

While it is true that no pitcher has pitched more than one perfect game, there are position players who have played in more than one perfect game.  In fact, there are six players who have played in three perfect games.  Who are they, and which perfect games did they participate in?

Fred correctly came up with Paul O'Neill, who was in the Browning, Wells and Cone games.
Michael correctly came up with the quartet of Rays who were on the losing side of three perfect games:  Evan Longoria, Ben Zobrist, Carlos Pena and Melvin Upton, who were in the Buerhle, Braden and Fernandez games.

The unguessed person (who was the first person to participate in three perfect games) was Alfredo Griffin, who like the Rays quartet, was on the losing side of all three games he participated in:  Barker, Browning and Martinez.

This was a bit tough, as two of the three players are obscure.

Fred correctly came up with Don Larsen, now 89 years old, who played on the Browns in 1953 (their last year in St. Louis) and Kansas City in 1960-61

The other two players were CF Johnny Groth (92 years old), Browns 1953 and KC 1956-57 and INF Billy Hunter (90 years old), Browns 1953 and KC 1958.

                      Last Sim's Trivia Question:

Who was the first person not named Mickey Mantle to win the AL MVP.

That question didn't last too long as Luke came up with the correct answer after only four minutes.

                      This Sim's Trivia Question:

Third basemen are the least-represented position in the Hall of Fame (excepting, of course, the newer positions of relief pitcher and designated hitter).  However, despite the dearth of third sackers in the Hall, there are two teams that are represented by two third basemen.  What are the teams and (of course) who are the players?

Post your answers in the #random channel on Slack.  100 shiny new Commissioner points to the first with the correct answer.

This one must have been too easy, because it was answered correctly (by Michael) within minutes of it being posted.  The answer is Joel Youngblood.
