Original Alaska Kodiak draftee retires

Joseph Hamilton, an original draftee of the then-Alaska Kodiaks, now-Los Angeles Scorpions, future-Shackamaxon Lenape, announced his retirement in this past sim. I previously featured Hamilton in a blog entry a few years ago when he finally reached the major leagues.

I've always had a soft spot for Hamilton, and re-signed him to minor league contracts several times so he could finish his career in my franchise. I guess he doesn't want to make the move to Philadelphia with the team, or just figured he wasn't going to ever graduate from AAA status.

Are there any O.G. 2002-drafted players still with their original franchises? Was Hamilton the last one?

  1. I believe the last original Monarch still with the team was Gregory Mudge, who was with the team through July 2013 before being traded away. He was re-acquired in 2015 and was with the team until a deal in July 2017.

I wanted to sign him again this offseason, but Mr. Mudge and I had a disagreement about the fair value of his services. The former all-time home run leader (since passed by Luis Jeon) wanted several million more than I was willing to pay.

Otherwise, I was far too much of a wheeler-dealer to hold on to anyone else that long. Although, all-time saves leader Tim Vallejo was a pick of mine in the first amateur draft in 2003. He stayed with the Monarchs until the end of the 2016 team before stabbing me in the back and signing a free agent deal with those SOBs in Maui.

  2. Vallejo will be a free agent again this offseason, Mack, so you can bring him back if you are so inclined.

  3. 60+ saves for Vallejo in two years, and you toss him to the side like so much trash!

See, free agents of the world! This is why you should never sign with Maui.

Come to Seattle instead, preferably for bargain deals. We take care of you here. Why, look what we did for Mr. Morales, sending him back to Hickory at his request, a city where he has thrived before and feels comfortable. Now, his new team has won all six of his starts and everyone is delighted.

In contrast, look how miserable Mr. Palacio is after spurning us to sign with Cleveland.

Yes, sir. Seattle is the place to go for every savvy free agent.
