Hickory-Seattle Trade

Frank Ferrara knew that the Hickory Huskers held a valuable chip, despite their disappointing 2022 season. In fact, because of their disappointing 2022 season. The #1 overall draft pick. Well, Frank has cashed in that pick in a trade today with the universally hated Seattle Monarchs, acquiring a raft of help for the Huskers.

In the trade, Hickory acquired from Seattle the following valuable assets:

Shackamaxon's first-round pick (#9 overall)
ML 2B Pedro Campos
AA RP Jesus Cruz
AA SP Ho Zhong
A OF Guillermo Ramirez

Quite a haul to simply drop back eight spots in the first round.

Meanwhile, Seattle now will send its scouting staff out on round-the-clock assignments to scour every player who might be available in the draft. Because missing on that pick, after investing this kind of capital, is the kind of thing that gets general managers fired.

  1. It matters how you value the picks if you think that he is getting a 'haul'. My research shows that the top 3 picks are significantly more important than any other picks in the draft. That means that all first round picks are not created equal and quantity is not equal to quality. In this league with only one or two true prospects in every draft, some would say that there is not a 'haul' big enough to trade away that #1 pick overall. But that is just one opinion, everyone has their own view.

  2. I've got data going back to the start of the league, and I disagree with Jeremy. Top picks are important, but they flame out as often as they hit. In fact, I've traded for number one picks in two separate years where those picks that completely flopped.

If I had anywhere to start Campos, I never would have made this trade. Not in a million years. There's at least a 50-50 chance that he has more major league value than whoever I pick at #1. But, I didn't have anywhere to start Campos and having him sit on my bench while waiting for Hukill to lose his skills would have been exceedingly wasteful.

On a separate note, I don't even remotely understand why someone would chime in on a trade just to say that, in his opinion, one of the teams made a bad deal. I've thought that lots of times, but I've never thought it was appropriate to express that opinion. Seems remarkably rude.

But that is just one opinion, and I have heard that everyone has their own view.

  3. My apologies. The last two paragraphs were over the top. I should have followed the think twice, then write strategy. Sorry, Jeremy.

  4. I just want to educate people about the value of players, that is all. I never said it was a bad deal, I think that Camops is going to be a good player and sure he could become great (my scout has him at 4 stars, but we all know that could change for the better). The rest of the players in the deal are average at best though. So again 'haul' is for each to figure out for their own.

I just think that the early picks in the first round have a much higher ceiling than the later picks in the first round and I think that everyone should take the time to look at this for themselves and think about this when doing a trade. All first round picks are not created equal. (Many of us are very busy and do not have time to do that research though). I agree they flame out probably the same amount, but I believe that a much higher percentage chance that the top 3 guys become superstars than the rest, but I could be wrong as all of my research is in the OEL and not in this league and every league is different. I also think that the high number of top draft picks that you have traded for in this and the other league and the high amount of superstars that you have on your team is a quick superficial look at how the high picks are more important than the lower picks.

I was not saying that this was a bad deal. In fact, this deal was much fairer than the early deals that you did in the OEL that got you most of key talent that is helping you with your run in that league, but it is easier for someone like you to make this league because you have a 'extra' player like Campos while the rest of us are looking for our first Campos type player.

    Apology accepted :)
