Speeding up the off-season

One thing that I think we can all agree on is that the off-season is too long. Just about none of us play the game to sit through endless rounds of amateur drafts, coaching offers and free-agent signings.

So, how can we speed up the off-season. I'm open to just about any and all suggestions. I'd like to have some ideas in place and voted on before we get to the off-season.

  1. Well, the obvious one is to conduct free agency and the amateur draft concurrently.

Otherwise conduct activities each night. Say like this:

    Day 1: Coaches Day one
    Day 2: Coaches Day 2-3
    Day 3: Coaches Day 4-5

Then a Free Agency/Amateur Draft each weeknight? With increasing increments?

    Day 1: Day 1-3/Round 1
    Day 2: Days 4-6/Round 2
    Day 3: Days 7-10/Round 3
    Day 4: Days 11-15/Round 4
    Day 5: Days 16-20/Round 5
    Day 6: Days 21-25/Rounds 6-11 (by machine)
    Day 7: Days 26-30

Then we're at Spring Training and bam! New season in two weeks!

Can you tell I think too much about these sorts of things?

  2. I agree with doing multiple free agent days at once. I'd cut it down to 5 days. Something like this:

    Day 1: Days 1-3
    Day 2: Days 4-6
    Day 3: Days 8-15
    Day 4: Days 16-22
    Day 5: Days 23-30

I dunno about running the draft concurrently. I don't really have a problem with doing that, though.

  3. I agree with running multiple days from coaches signing and free agency in a single sim. I don't have a strong opinion as to how to structure that.

I'm indifferent on whether the draft should be run contemporaneously with free agency or not, but it would help things speed up.

I leave it up to Zev as to how frequently he's comfortable running sims. Every day may be asking a lot of him, although having an assistant commissioner would obviously help with that.
