Los Angeles rents OF

After starting the season in rebuilding mode, the Los Angeles Scorpions suddenly find themselves one game out of playoff position. To take the next step and restore the glory of one of the most-successful franchises in league history, the team announced the acquisition of OF Alva Mendonca today from the New York Gothams.

"Alva will bring an immediate impact to our lineup, giving us one more solid bat in our lineup," owner/GM Michael Weintraub said. "He can bat anywhere from leadoff to eighth, and will also provide more veteran experience for our very-young team."

Heading to New York from the Los Angeles AAA affiliate is outfielder Rafael Sandoval. "We had high hopes for Raffy when we traded Bill Turek for him, but the emergence of Ignacio Lopez from out of nowhere has made him expendable. And, in a win-now mode, we had to sacrifice him for the present."
