Based on the infamous Shultz historical spreadsheets for the league, I have gone back and looked at how players drafted by the various teams have ended up. The data seems to me to explain a lot of league history.
Some caveats first. First, this is all based on the team that drafted a player. So, if they were later traded, released, etc, the player's stats all still "count" for the team that originally drafted him. Second, this doesn't take into account where someone was drafted. Teams don't get any credit (or demerits) for picking high (or low) in the draft. Third, this goes back to the inception of the league and counts all the drafts by the various owners (or computers) running the teams.
That said, here are the numbers.

I'm not really surprised that my team's drafting has been so bad. Just about the only impact player I can really remember ever drafting was Junior Cuomo, and that was nearly 20 seasons ago.
ReplyDeleteCuomo, drafted in 2003, is indeed the best player drafted by Shackamaxon, as measured by WAR anyway. The rest of the top 5 are:
ReplyDeleteBill Turek
Thomas Brasfield
Anton Suarez
Kenneth Lea
Not a particularly inspiring group.
