As usual, the Seattle Monarchs have opened the off-season trading market, this time with a big trade. Seattle is sending five players, four of who saw action for the major league squad this year, to Highland in exchange for outfielder
Mike Minty and the second-round pick that originally belonged to Norfolk (#18 overall).
The new foundation for Highland's future includes:
All five players are 25 years old or younger. Sharp was the batter of the year in AA SL1 after hitting .369 with 68 extra base hits. Gonzales has posted ERAs under 2.50 each of the last two seasons. Caldwell is a swing man who throws 98, but was betrayed by some bad defense this last season. Soto is a career .301 hitter in the majors who can play six positions. Cannon hit .337 in AAA and then .438 in the majors in his September call-up.
Meanwhile, Minty is a very high risk, very high reward player. He is currently battling back from a torn MCL and is likely to miss the start of the season. Minty also offers stupendous nickname potential.
I hope Sharp turns into something special, if not, Mack got the best end of another trade, my scout does not think much of the other 4 going to Highlands, I hope he is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping Sharp is special too cause that's what made this trade possible. But if you look at my team than these players can only really help my team even if they aren't great...I just need average to good lol.I'm also hoping that Sharp can have stat's close to Minty cause I didn't want to trade him but that injury scared me.
ReplyDeleteJeremy, whoever "wins" this deal will probably depend on whether Minty heals and is fine or whether his injury saps his skills and he craters. In the former case, I probably come out ahead. In the latter, John cleaned my clock. It's a question that I don't think anybody knows the answer to. I've certainly seen it play out both ways with players over the years.
ReplyDeleteBecause Minty's health is such an unknown, I think it's a fair deal. Greater potential reward with Minty (probably, although Sharp is on a great trajectory) but much greater risk too.
LOL Mack, I don't think I have ever seen a player on your team end up being zapped by an injury, they all seem to make it through just fine :)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, it's happened. Three guys that immediately come to mind are Paul Guerrero, Armando Cedeno, and Eugene Alustiza. Some of them I have traded because I didn't want to run the risk they wouldn't recover. Some I kept and watched fall apart.
