Head for the hills, folks! The impossible has happened! The Seattle Monarchs have won the Cecil Cup.
Peter Bird turned in an amazing game, scattering 3 hits over 7 2/3 innings. Except for one hard-hit ball by Robert Fout in the sixth, the Paddlewheelers were just unable to get anything going.
The Monarchs, on the other hand, were able to bang out four runs on three hits on the third and a double in the fourth off the bat of Sean Arant.
Box Log
Please note that I've decided to hold off on proceeding to the next season until tomorrow. We have a new owner (who, we hope, will introduce himself shortly) and I'd like to give him a chance to make roster changes and make offers to impending free agents. So, we'll flip to the next season tomorrow.

Congratulations, Mack, welcome to the club!
ReplyDeleteAmazing. Why didn't you guys tell me it felt this good to win one of these things?
ReplyDeleteHeck of a great Cup series, perhaps the best ever. (Certainly the best ever from my standpoint, but that's not what I meant.) It's one of two series to go to seven games and four runs was the largest differential in any game.
And, I'll just share that Zev was almost responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. I worked late tonight and left to go home just after getting Zev's email that he couldn't do a live blog. So, I checked the blog via my trusty blackberry while driving through the mean streets of downtown. What I found, of course, caused me to have to check the comments, the box score, the game log, etc. Totally dangerous for every other person on Interstate 5 tonight. Do you know how hard it is to read a box score on a blackberry at 68 mph?
Of course, I blame Zev for this rather than the idiot who couldn't wait to read everything in sight. :)
Oh yeah. Ummm. We were honored to play against such a worthy opponent as the Paddlewheelers. They were a hell of a team this year and we were lucky that the series worked out this way. (Continue standard post-championship interview gibberish until nauseated.) It really was a hell of a team Nate put together this year and while I was hopeful going into the Cup (and Game 7) that I could win, I did think the odds favored him.
Argh! But, to be honest, I'm somewhat happy for Mack.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm still well-placed for next year.
We shall see, Nate, we shall see...
