The two teams are close, really close. Without interleague play, it's very hard to know how they matchup. But, I'll pick the Monarchs in 6 because I like my playoff starting rotation a hair better than Nate's. But, this could go either way and I wouldn't be surprised.

  1. ... and the '05 Stockholm squad would've smoked either team in 5.

  2. Michael, this is getting sad. Just for argument's sake, let's compare the 2005 Stockholm squad with the 2011 Monarchs.

    Stockholm ...

    1. Won 17 fewer games.
    2. Had a Pythagorean winning percentage .116 lower.
    3. Won 8 fewer home games.
    4. Won 9 fewer road games.
    5. Had a worse winning percentage in extra inning games and one-run games.
    6. Had a .011 lower batting average.
    7. Hit 4 fewer home runs.
    8. Scored 68 fewer runs.
    9. Had 14 fewer hits.
    10. Hit 48 fewer doubles.
    11. Walked 26 times less.
    12. Struck out three more times.
    13. Had an on base percentage .012 lower.
    14. Had a slugging percentage .017 lower.
    15. Had an OPS .029 lower.
    16. Stole 4 fewer bases.
    17. Scored 22% less runs relative to the league.
    18. Had an earned run average .58 higher.
    19. Gave up 62 more hits.
    20. Gave up 118 more runs.
    21. Gave up 65 more home runs.
    22. Walked 98 more batters.
    23. Struck out 181 fewer batters.
    24. Allowed 12% more runs relative to league.
    25. Posted a fielding percentage .004 lower.
    26. Committed 31 more errors.
    27. Allowed 13 more unearned runs

Now, the Stockholm team did have 16 more triples, 1 more save, 2 more complete games, and 27 more double plays. Whoop dee doo. I suspect that the comparison with this year's River Cities squad would come out about the same.

I'm not disputing that the 2005 Stockholm team wasn't a good or even great team. But, it just didn't compare to the two squads squaring off this year. That's no disrespect, it's just the clear truth. You can be proud of your 2005 team without being blind.
