The Seattle Monarchs have moved on to the Cecil Cup series by defeating the Maui Mashers 4-0. Seattle starter Ronald Placencia shut down the Masher bats by pitching a 2 hit complete game shutout.
The Sternwheelers moved ahead of the Saskatoon Amigos with a 6-5 ten inning victory.
Game 6: Thursday night.

Congratulations on Seattle making it another series win. From my unofficial count I have that 10 series wins for Mack with just 5 losses in this league and 10 series wins with just 4 in the OEL. If this is a coin-toss then you have one funky 3 sides coin, Mack, and 2 of the 3 sides are coming up winners :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it could be another classic River Cities/Seattle cross-country duel upcoming unless the Mounties from Saskatoon can win 2 in a row. Either way, it has been a good postseason so far!!!!!
Man, I'm just glad it was Marez up in the bottom of the firs with 2 outs and the bases loaded.
ReplyDeleteWow. And look at what Pitcher Diehl did against Saskatoon in the bottom of the seventh. Three pitches - three outs. Burdine: first pitch ground out. Peavey: first pitch ground out. Frison: first pitch fly out.
Still a very tight series. At this point it could still go either way.
Yeah, I'm not buying the whole "coin-toss" thing either, Jeremy. If it's true, then we definitely need to examine this coin. I can't even count the number of times I've lost to Mack in the playoffs in both leagues. Argh! Congrats, though, Mack, on another successful mauling.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to you too, Matt, on another strong Maui season. When you consider where the team was when you took over, back-to-back division titles is mighty impressive. When your budget catches up with your income, it will be even better. But it's really tough to win a playoff series though when your leadoff hitter goes 0-23 with a .000/.000/.000 line. Mr. Amos did you no favors.
ReplyDeleteI said before the series that my team would go as far as the starting pitching took it. Well, the starting pitching was amazing and carried the team this series. Five starts, 3-1 record with two complete games (including one shutout), 42 IP (8.4 per start), 20 hits, 11 walks, 29 Ks, a .154 batting average against, and a 1.71 ERA. That's spectacular. Hope there's something left in the tank. Impressively, Placencia only threw 89 pitches in the Game Five shutout, so he should bounce back well and everyone else should be well-rested.
And, Jeremy, it may be that I adopted the coin flip mantra to protect my mental health after losing in my first three trips to the Cecil Cup, including dropping a three games to one lead to Michael in 2006 that still stings. I still do think the playoffs are inherently unpredictable. But, maybe I should put that aside and start crowing a little more, now that the odds have moved into my favor.
Nah.
By the way, go Saskatoon in Game Six! Anything to extend the series.
ReplyDeleteAhh, 2006. That was a good series, but not as good as my steamrolling of Mack in 2005.
ReplyDeleteI forget. Is there anyone still on earth who was alive when you last won, Michael?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it's like World War I or something.
Flags fly forever, Nate. And there are four of them flying over the Scorpion Pit in sunny Southern California.
ReplyDeleteAllow me to quote Lazarus Long...
ReplyDelete"This sad little lizard told me that he was a brontosaurus on his mother's side. I did not laugh; people who boast of ancestry [ancient titles] often have little else to sustain them. Humoring them costs nothing and adds happiness in a world in which happiness is always in short supply."
That's a great quotation, Nate.
