The winner of the John Grondin sweepstakes is.... Los Angeles! The winning bid was a five year deal worth $30.6, $25.3, $27.5, $29.6, $29.7 and a mutual option sixth year for $31m.
In addition, New York signed C Adrian Labarbera (Hickory) to a minor league contract.
Next sim will cover the period to 2/1 and will occur tomorrow night.

Yay! Thanks, Jeremy!
ReplyDeleteWow, counting the options and the bonuses, if I'm doing the math right, Grondin could earn more than $200,000,000 over six years.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of scratch.
Yes, it is. I would've gone for a seventh year, pushing the guarantees over $200m, but I didn't want to risk it.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Michael! I guess you decided to let Peppers become a free agent?
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the structure of the deal, I'm paying a bit less in years two and three of the deal. I proposed it that way to have a little room to try to resign Peppers to a two-year deal (he'll be 37 at the end of this coming season).
ReplyDeleteHowever, if I can't resign Peppers, I'd gladly trade six years of Grondin, in his prime, for a Jeter-esque thanks-for-the-legacy contract that Peppers may want from me.
Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that it would be impossible. And even though it's a lot of money, you can't argue that Grondin isn't a monster player. That's going to be one hell of an infield you've got there. The race in the Zotti division is going to be very interesting! I always enjoy the free agency period, and this year has been no exception.
ReplyDeleteGrondin, Grondin, Grondin. It's all about Grondin. No love for my Adrian Labarbera signing? He's a quality backup AAA catcher!
