Newbie Question

So I'm not totally sure how things work with regard to free agent signings. Are there multiple sims devoted to offers/counteroffers, or is it just the one? In other words, if I miss the current sim - and I might, because I have a variety of nonsense consuming my time from now until about midnight tonight - will all the free agents be signed by the time I load the new sim?

  1. I am with Frank on the timing. It is a tough travel weekend for me and I will probably not even download the last sim until 10PM or so tonight so I am wondering how this is running from here on out. People have said FA period is different, but no one has explained how or what we are doing. Just a little info and a schedule would be helpful. Thanks.

  2. Well, at a minimum know that it takes place over about 30 days and the commissioner can sim 1 or 30 or any space in between. I won't speak for Zev but in the past he early sims have generally been 1 day and they gradually lengthen as interest and good players wane.

So it's not a one-shot-only kind of thing.

On the other hand, with the prices players are demanding I wouldn't mind if no one made offers and Zev just simmed the entire thing so we could get back to the real world and away from player-wish world.

  3. Nate: That's version 6.5. In version 9, free agency can go all the way to February, or they can sign quickly. It's not like the orderly FA period in 6.5 and much more like real life.

Frank and Jeremy, I'd be surprised if many free agents sign during the first sim and I'd expect none to sign, unless they're given an overwhelming offer. And, given what they're asking for, I doubt anyone's going to be overwhelming them. But, I confess that's based on pretty minimal experience with the OOTP 9 offseason.

  4. If anyone was going to overwhelm one of the FAs it would probably be me, as I still have oodles of cash to spend.

But, even I'm not Steinbrennerian enough to spend $36m a year for a FA. Hell, I remember when $15m/yr contracts were shocking in this league.

  5. And they should continue to be so!
