Seattle, Saskatoon Take Game 1

The Seattle Monarchs crushed the Cleveland Steamers 8-1 in the first game of the playoffs.  Ronald Placencia (19-10) held the Steamers to nine hits and one run in eight innings of work while striking out eleven.  The hitting stars of the game for the Monarchs included CF Roger Nichols who missed hitting for the cycle (he had a single, double and triple) and RF David Kerry, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI.  Nathaniel Burton went 3-4 in a losing effort for the Steamers.

The Amigos beat the Mashers today in an 11-7 victory.  This game was all about the offense, as both starting pitchers were roughed up.  Saskatoon took the lead for good in the third inning with a four run inning featuring a Brian Frison 2 RBI triple, a Royal Wilson RBI single and a Billy Pla double.

  1. Not the way that I wanted to start this series at home. Turner did not help his case to get his 7-year $17M+/year contract in the offseason in this game. 7H, 6BB, 2K and 4ER in 7 IP, not the line for an ace of a staff. And where were the runs...10 hits and only one crosses the plate. As expected Placencia pitched very well with 11 Ks to help out his own cause.

Game 2 Kaler (last seasons Cy Young winner) goes for the Steamers against the man with the lowest ERA in the Monarch rotation Christopher Hester. Let's see if the offense comes out to play in game 2...

  2. I just went through the log, and the big 4 run inning from Tunrer all happened after there were 2 outs. Booo.

Also Trevino, who was perfect in the regular season, 0 ER in 17.1 IP with 17 Ks, gave up a run on a BALK and a WP!!!!! Not a good way to start this series.

  3. On the other hand, Jeremy, your team turned FIVE double plays during the game. The game could have been a lot worse.

The biggest disparity in Game One was that Seattle drew nine walks while Cleveland didn't get a single free pass. I wouldn't have expected Turner to walk that many guys.

And, as for the other contest, what a terrible time for Maui's Kyle Fike to have his worst start of the year--his shortest outing, most runs allowed, and fewest strikeouts.

  4. No kidding! Tonight is definitely a "must win" for my team.

  7. Yeah Mack, it was his highest walk total for the year...good timing. I do have an issue with my BB/K ratio, one of the worst in the league, but that is more due to the lack of a true power strikeout pitcher than that many walks.
