It was a pitcher's duel out there as Seattle took Game 1 of the Cecil Cup series from the Saskatoon Amigos by a score of 2-0.
Both pitchers held their opposing teams scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when SS Rich Bender reached on a single and pinch hitter Steve Jackson (pinch hitting for Mudge??!!) hit one over the right field wall for a two run home run.
Bender was the only player on either team to have more than one hit (he had three) in the game. Joseph Macaluso went the entire way for Seattle, earning a complete game shutout.

Game 2 will be Wednesday night.
Terrific time for Macaluso's second shutout of the season. Since he's going to be starting twice this series, it's good to see him pitch so well, and to beat longtime stud Demarcus Ramirez while he was at it.
ReplyDeleteWhile the game's manager always makes strange decisions, it usually seems to backfire. But, pinch-hitting for Mudge with Jackson worked out just fine here. :)
Maybe the game knows something I don't about the status of the 36-year-old Mudge's inevitable decline. It wasn't in the regular season numbers (.333/.364/.607 with 32 home runs and a 43.6 VORP). But, while Mudge is hitting .304 for the playoffs, he has no extra base hits and just one walk. Kind of like Ichiro without speed or defense. I mean, Mudge can only muster a "9" rating at first base. That's pretty terrible.
By the way, and I'm totally jinxing myself here, the Monarchs' starters have now thrown 53 innings in 7 starts (7.6 innings per start) with a ERA of 2.20. That's not too bad.
