The Newcomer of the Year and Slick Fielder winners were announced by the league this week.
The Newcomer of the Year is Ohio's Luis Rodrigez. The slugging first baseman was the second round pick for Ohio in 2019. After working his way through the minor leagues, he was named the Buckeyes' starting first baseman for 2023 with no previous major league experience. Rodriguez rewarded the owner's faith in him by hitting .315 with 39 home runs and 119 RBI, winding up with an impressive .955 OPS.
The Seattle Monarchs dominated the Slick Fielder list, as they captured three of the nine available awards. The winners are:
P Ethan Moyer, Ohio
C Brian Walker, Houston
1B Juan Gomez, Seattle (third award)
2B Felipe Mendoza, Brick (third award, second award at 2B, second consecutive award)
3B Luis Figueroa, Brooklyn
LF Alvin Sherman, Ohio (second award)
CF Bas Bijkerk, Seattle (fourth award, third consecutive award)
RF Lucio Muniz, Seattle (third consecutive award)
