Two big games on the docket this evening: Seattle tries to tie their series with Hickory and Brooklyn goes for the sweep. How did it turn out?
In our first game, Seattle starter Teddy O'Herlihy pitched a two-hitter as the Monarchs defeated the Huskers 5-0. Norman Kuhn hit a two-run shot to lead the Monarchs.
The series is now knotted at two as we suddenly have a best of three between the Monarchs and the Huskers.
Out in Maui, the Brooklyn Wolves smelled blood and scored in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to open a 5-0 lead. Four different Wolves hit home runs to open a seemingly-insurmountable lead as Kevin Kepner stepped on the mound for his sixth inning of work.
Maximo Rodriguez led off with a single, and Barney Maxon followed with a HBP. Kepner then walked the next hitter, loading the bases. With the bases full, and nobody out, Santiago Brito singled in a run, and then another scored on a fielding error by short stop Jeff Wardlaw. Juan Salas drove in a run with a single, and then Angel Banuelos singled in two to draw the score even. Richard Bender then walked to reload the bases, but Kepner coaxed a couple of ground ball outs, the first a 4-2-3 double play, to escape the inning with it tied at 5.
In the seventh, Brooklyn went down quietly in order, while Maui took the lead with a single, sacrifice, and then another single by Kondo. In the eighth, Brooklyn threatened, but a rally-killing double play kept it 6-5 Maui. Eric Halliwell pinch hit and led off the ninth with a single before being erased in yet another double play, and Juan Carillo grounded out to second to end the game.
Maui stays alive, but Brooklyn still leads three games to one.
Games 5 will be simmed on Monday night, and we know there will be at least one game 6 on Tuesday. Will Maui force a second? We'll find out tomorrow!
