Maui Wins, Once Again It's Maui and Seattle

The Maui Mashers sent the Barstow Lizards home for the season with a 1-0 victory.  Barstow starter Eric Thomas (6-13, 4.83) turned in one of his best games of the season, pitching seven innings and only allowing two hits.  However, he also allowed five walks, and it was one of those walks -- a leadoff pass to Ramiro Ramirez in the fifth -- that cost him the game.  Juan Villatoro 21-5, 2.99) picked up the win by pitching eight shutout innings.

The schedule for the Cecil Cup will be as follows (subject to change):

Game 1:  Saturday night, Oct 13
Game 2:  Tuesday night, Oct 16
Game 3: Wednesday ngiht, Oct 17
Game 4:  Thursday night, Oct 18
Game 5:  Saturday night, Oct 20
Game 6:  Sunday night, Oct 21
Game 7:  Monday night, Oct 22

Good luck, Matt and Mack.

  1. Based on the results the last two Cecil Cups, both Maui victories, I think it's clear that the Seattle Monarchs are the big underdogs here. All right-thinking people should be rooting for the plucky upstarts from the Pacific Northwest against those bullies from Florida.

  2. Interesting facts, ignoring Cecil Cups featuring teams with identical records.

    1. The team with the better regular-season record is 6-12 in the Cecil Cup.

    2. The team with the better regular-season Pythagorean record is 7-8 in the Cecil Cup.

    3. In "mismatches," which I'm defining as a ten-game gap in regular-season records, the team with the better record is 1-1.

    4. In Pythagorean "mismatches," the team with the better record is 1-3.

I think you all know by now where I'm going with this, so I won't belabor the point.

  3. The one win in both of those last two scenarios was the lovable losers from Cleveland (now Atlanta) back in 2014. We came in with 83 wins for the season and the evil empire had 109. They had to squeeze out a narrow 4 games to 3 series victory. Guess I am not one to buck the trends.
